Android has quickly become one of the most popular mobile platforms. It is currently even outselling Apple’s iPhone. Android phones are equipped with the latest technology and applications. They are used to connect to the Internet on cellular networks, private networks and Wi-Fi hotspots.
Despite their many advantages, Android phones also carry security risks when they go online. When an Android phone establishes an Internet connection on a Wi-Fi-hotspot, it is easy for third parties to see the data transmitted as well as what the user does online. An Android VPN (Virtual Private Network) secures these connections, preventing third parties from accessing private information.
VPN Security Features
VPNs replace a user’s IP address with one from the VPN server. IP addresses are what websites and third parties use to identify unique users and their locations. Since a user’s IP address is replaced by one from the VPN server, websites and third parties cannot build a profile about the user or tell where they are located.
There are a variety of Android VPN protocols available. The most popular are PPT and L2TP/IPsec. PPTP is known for very fast speeds and basic 128-bit encryption. L2TP/IPsec provides strong 256-bit encryption. This is the encryption level used by financial institutions. L2TP/IPsec also encapsulates the data twice which protects against tampering while in transit. The added security of L2TP/IPsec requires additional CPU process which can result in slightly slower speeds. Both PPTP and L2TP/IP are supported on Android phones.
Secure Web Browsing
While Android VPNs provide several benefits, security is typically the most popular. Without an Android VPN, third parties can easily access a user’s data while they use an unprotected public Wi-Fi hotspot. An Android VPN prevents hackers from accessing a user’s data while they are online.
Internet Service Providers regularly use Deep Packet Inspection to see what user’s do online. They use this information to limit connection speeds. When a user connects to the Internet using an Android VPN, the ISP can only see encrypted data and the VPN server. They cannot access the information they need to throttle connection speeds.
Many websites restrict access to only certain geographical regions. Personal VPNs for Android devices allow users to bypass these restrictions. Because the user’s IP address is replaced by one from the VPN server, they appear to be browsing the Internet from the VPN server location. Say, for example, a US website blocks access to anyone outside of America. When a Chinese user connects to that website using a US VPN server, they appear to be located in America and are granted access.
There are many reasons to secure Android devices with VPNs. An Android VPN protects a user’s data from malicious third parties. It unblocks IP-restricted websites and prevents ISPs from limiting connection speeds based on user online behavior. As Android device popularity continues to grow, the importance of secure personal VPNs will grow too.
